7 Warning Signs Your Septic System Is Failing

A failing septic system is one of the most expensive home repairs you can face — but it rarely fails without warning. Here are the 7 signs you should never ignore.

1. Slow Drains Throughout the House

One slow drain usually means a clog in that specific drain. But if multiple drains throughout your house are slow — sinks, tubs, and toilets — that's a sign your septic tank is full or your main line is blocked.

What to do: Call us for an inspection. Don't use harsh chemical drain cleaners — they kill the beneficial bacteria your septic system needs.

2. Gurgling Sounds from Drains or Toilets

Gurgling sounds when you flush or drain water indicate air is being pushed back through your pipes. This happens when your tank is full and there's nowhere for the wastewater to go.

What to do: Stop using water as much as possible and call us immediately.

3. Sewage Odors Inside or Outside

Sewage odors inside your home mean wastewater is backing up into your plumbing. Odors outside near your tank or drain field mean your system is overloaded or your drain field is failing.

What to do: This is a health hazard. Call us for emergency service.

4. Wet or Soggy Spots in Your Yard

If you notice wet, soggy, or unusually green grass over your drain field — especially during dry weather — your drain field is surfacing effluent. This means your drain field is saturated and can't absorb wastewater fast enough.

What to do: Avoid the area (it's a health hazard) and call us for an inspection.

5. Sewage Backing Up Into Your Home

This is the most serious sign — sewage coming up through floor drains, toilets, or tubs. This means your tank is completely full and there's nowhere for wastewater to go.

What to do: Stop using all water immediately and call us for emergency service at (208) 607-3604.

6. Unusually Lush, Green Grass Over the Drain Field

Counterintuitively, a failing drain field can make your grass look great — because it's being fertilized by surfacing effluent. If you notice a suspiciously green patch of grass over your drain field, don't celebrate.

What to do: Have your system inspected. The green grass is a warning sign, not a good thing.

7. It's Been More Than 5 Years Since Your Last Pump

This isn't a symptom — it's a risk factor. If you can't remember when your tank was last pumped (or if it's been more than 5 years), you're playing with fire.

What to do: Schedule an inspection. We'll measure your sludge levels and tell you exactly where you stand.

What Happens If You Ignore These Signs?

Ignored warning signs lead to:

  • Complete system failure requiring emergency service
  • Drain field damage that can cost $5,000–$20,000 to repair or replace
  • Health hazards from sewage exposure
  • Property value damage — a failed septic system can make a home unsellable

The Good News

Most septic problems are preventable with regular maintenance. A $450 pump every 3–5 years and a $150 annual inspection can prevent $15,000 in repairs.

If you're seeing any of these warning signs, call us at (208) 607-3604. We serve all of Southeast Idaho and offer 24/7 emergency service.
